You Are Quite Something
To the Moon
you are quite something!
our very first nightlight,
and the ever-cycling
lunatic of heaven.
who doesn’t think so,
sing so?
the Chinese sent
a goddess to you
more than once,
and still counting;
their poets shaped words
by your jade wheel.
scattered families
make you the holiday sign
for togetherness,
even in darkest times
when ghosts turn up
and strange wolves howl.
Buddhists “know”
your enlightenment
and romantics
mainly your angst
(which is really
just their own).
astronomers and conjurors
name you claim you
through jiggling scopes juggling numbers
while you just beam on
–or toss them an eclipse
from out your bag of tricks.
too true
that your light is re-fashioned
and on loan
from another.
yet you are
an original:
moving through stardust
you’ve come to us
bearing multifold gifts
quietly receiving
in return
merely
our awe
