yoga
a human being is sixty percent the same dna as a banana
softening what tries
to be iron but isn’t,
the talkative branch that
clangs against the house
i'sn’t brave. i walk through
cattails wanting something
that isn’t asking or thinking.
spring’s sap sings sugar
where bees tighten into knots
of life’s itchy with the spooky
machinery of chasing
the wrong things.
the purple cosmos is a knife in my mouth
and giving until more is not more
but sameness, the miracle
that everybody needs.
a human being is sixty percent
the same dna as a banana
and i believe that if we peeled off
our skins there would be sweetness
in the bodies we give to each other
because reaching only makes us
more beautiful when
we're doing it together.

The Pursuit Of Delight
"I sketch a simple stick figure, and it bears a passing resemblance to a spider - and that's perfectly okay. I strum my daughter's ukulele, and the strings seem to protest, wondering what they've done to deserve such treatment. My rendition of Whitney Houston's classics is... creative, to say the least, as I butcher the lyrics with gleeful abandon. But I'm not embarrassed; I'm embracing the art of imperfection, the beauty of failure, and the liberation of forgiveness. I'm learning that embarrassment only holds power if I allow it to. Thank you for this freedom, which allows me to explore my creativity without fear of judgment, to laugh at my mistakes, and to find joy in the process, not just the product. I'm discovering that it's okay to be a beginner, to make mistakes, and to learn from them. And in doing so, I'm finding a sense of peace and self-acceptance that I never thought possible."

Welcome to my new series, a weekly blog on what’s inspiring me. I spent much of last week in bed with a stomach bug. I’ll spare you the details of that—but in addition to the grotesque physical symptoms, I had some fever dreams I won’t soon forget. Imagine my surprise to see Vocal’s newest challenge: Write a fiction story about a recurring dream or nightmare.
