Yesterdays That Never Came

I waited beside all the roads we once knew

Certain tomorrow would finally break through

Hands full of letters never received

Heart full of futures I foolishly believed

The clocks kept moving while nothing arrived

Dreams growing brittle yet somehow alive

Each passing season wore down at the seams

Still I kept feeding impossible dreams

Yesterdays that never came circle my mind

Ghost days abandoned and left behind

Memories formed from things never done

Mourning a life that never begun

I pictured your voice in the rain on the glass

Imagined reunions that failed before passed

Built entire worlds from the crumbs of maybe

Then watched them collapse back inside of me daily

People moved onward with children and plans

While I held smoke in uncertain hands

Some losses are strange because nothing was there

Only imagined love filling the air

Photographs faded that never were taken

Promises silent though deeply unshaken

Even my grief felt confused and misplaced

Crying for something time never embraced

Now I sit older with winter-grey skies

Still seeing those roads when I close both my eyes

Yesterdays that never came linger somehow

Like unfinished prayers still haunting me now
