Years come and go
… suggesting what’s ahead.
Years come and go, suggesting what’s ahead,
hinting at what’s possible, marking time,
setting records, and burying the dead.
.
Years come and go, leaving things unsaid,
waiting on a breakthrough, reasoning a rhyme,
holding up a virtue, and taking things as read.
.
Years come and go, refining the unbred,
squeezing every freshness out of lime,
building monuments, and baking daily bread.
.
Years come and go, turning crimson into red,
planting gardens of sage, rosemary and thyme,
harvesting a season, and feeding the unfed.
.
Years come and go, leaving us in dread
of modern savages and the ravages of time.
Years come and go, feathering our bed
with love and laughter, and hopefulness sublime.
