Worthy of Your Deepest Respect

Never underestimate the power of his pride

He flounders with the beasts of the night,

Riding their tails in a blazing trail,

Shackled and saddled with his greatest fears,

Forbidden in expression just because he’s male.

***

He sweats with agony due to the pain he receives,

Wearing his mantle with his heart on his sleeve,

Tormented by the future wisdom he is still to regale,

Seldom wishing to be seen, so he’ll quietly leave.

***

Tomorrow is an endless possibility of doom,

Stitched within the fabric of his destiny,

Awakened from his latest nightmare in tears,

Due to face his impressive enemy.

***

Shadows weave their way through his memories,

Skipping the preciousness he holds so dear,

Wiping the slate clean after every battle,

Conquering his greatest hopes with never ending fear.

***

Shutters are bashed and locked before him,

Permission to enter never his for the taking,

Banished to the darkness of his past,

Hoping that he’ll survive instead of breaking.

***

He’s tested to his limits on the dawn of yesterday,

Left to wander the vestiges of his own personal hell,

Stimulated by the whispers and ongoing bullying,

He refuses to give the honour of saying farewell.

***

Confusion is his middle name,

Gained from the battles he was never to win,

Randomly showing his strength and power,

Sending the war zones into an unexpected tailspin.

***

He’s not to be underestimated, I’ll tell you now,

He has a heart of solid steel,

Strike while the going is rough,

Won’t guarantee you’ll make him kneel.

***

He’s worth watching for sure,

As he dances with the strength of his ancestry guiding,

Down but not out, don’t be mistaken,

As he builds his comeback without actually hiding.

***

Scattered showers drench the highways,

But he wades his way through dry as a bone,

He can’t be downtrodden by the mystery held,

Bully his hide and you’ll soon be overthrown.

***

Mess with his pride within your own resistance,

As I promise you’ll be totally floored,

You were warned about underestimating,

But you tried and now you are no more.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
