World Gone Silent

the silence brought by a (very) windy day

By Savannah K. WilsonPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

Screaming winds shake and rattle the house, worse it shakes the trees loose

In a moment, all connection to the world is lost and I feel ... alone

Lines of power, downed, chaos ensues and signals fade, all goes quiet

Emergency drives to power my last connection to others, does not hold

No idea what the time is now that phone has died, left in silent weeping

Can this really be all it takes to lose touch, one windy day all it took

Ever creeping thoughts of despair and being forgotten, on a day of silence

An unplanned entry ...

Yesterday (2nd September) high winds brought down multiple trees in the area and knocked out power and phone signals in my suburb and the surrounding ones, I tried driving 30 mins to somewhere with power and signal, but my phone would not charge fast enough in the car and it was a losing battle. For better or for worse, I would say 90% of my positive social interactions and friends are online people and due to the lack of internet, I spent the vast majority of the day unable to contact anyone and an incredible sense of loneliness and isolation sunk in ... eventually when my phone died, I spent what felt like half a day not even knowing what time it was, and eventually broke down from the feeling of crushing loneliness. The thing is, I think I would have felt the same even surrounded by people yesterday, because my people are my online friends and connections, most of my irl ones have slowly walked away from me in the previous year or so, they make no effort to interact, and ignore my efforts ... so while for some a day like yesterday could be a nice 'offline' experience ... for me it felt like being torn away and separated from my entire world.
