With Confidence

A free verse poem

Looking for answers

From every institution

All I found were confident lies

-

Promises from the pulpit

Of revelations to come

And when the sun rose

The day after the apocalypse

They offer no mea culpa,

just absolution for contributions

Of all the money you can spare

And a double dose of cognitive dissonance

-

Over the internet

They sell half-baked revelations

That fit on a t-shirt

So they can sell retribution

For your trumped up persecution

Trying to foment a revolution

That needs your contributions

All the money you can spare

And an active lack of empathy

-

Overburdened shelves in the self help section

Exclaim revelations in neon font

Promise an internal revolution

Based on your dissolution

Helping you reach the realization

That you CAN be everything

You SHOULD be everything

Except what you are now

-

All of them there to make you feel good

(Or bad, depending on your predilection)

Until the shame sets in

When they whisper :

Leave the money on the table, or

I take crypto

Just like a politician

-

So the next time I’m down on my luck

My only resolution to sell myself

-

I’ll testify on a stage paid for

Out of my own pocket, filled

By the tithing thousands

-

Sell my soul as a promotion

As if I even had a sliver left

Keeping hidden the conspiracy

That conspiracy theorists

Are in a conspiracy

To leave you with nothing

-

Write my inspirational story

Edited, packaged, massaged

Until it has a happy ending

The inevitable narrative it never was

-

For a small contribution

I’ll give you my revelations

Give you all the answers you seek

-
