The end?

Author's note: Soon, I'll be preparing my school room for my 40th and final year of teaching. It's bittersweet. Every one of those years has had ups and downs, challenges and triumphs. This poem is inspired by my waning career.

The clock ticks loudly,

Louder than a childhood timepiece

Each gear clacks sharply into place,

A clear reminder that the end is eminent

*

The music box is winding down,

Its tinkly notes slowing to a crawl

No one

will

need

can

rewind it

*

The ride is coming to an end

Was it a train,

Crawling along with trees, fields, and towns whisking by?

Was it a ferris wheel,

Set on repeat, round and round, up and down?

Was it a roller coaster,

With exhilarating highs and thrilling drops?

Was it an airplane,

With a slow ascent and views for miles?

*

Yes, all of these rides and more

The rider eagerly steps up

For new adventures,

No plan to stop

Until...

The clock clacks its final

Tick
