Why the Willow Tree Weeps
A poem with my personal spin on why the leaVes bow down.
There is a legend that fairies in Virginia cried when they heard that Christ had been crucifed, and their tears fell in the shape of crosses which are known as fairy stones. You can see them on the ground at Fairy Stone State Park.
I once read that willow tree branches were used to beat Christ before His crucifixion. As I walked past a Weeping Willow tree in a local park, I decided to write a poem on the same theme, explaining why the tree weeps. I hope you enjoy.
Why Willow Weeps
Willow sighed as her branches cut 39 lashes into His flesh
She trembled when blood ran from His crown of thorns
As His hands and feet were being nailed to the cross
The tree bent ever so slightly and began to mourn
Angry that her branches were chosen
With remorse and shame, she began to weep
As His blood ran profusely down
And into the earth did seep
When He cried, "It is finished" and gave up His life
Willow fell forward because of His suffering and pain
She will continue to bow low and weep
Until the day He returns to the earth again
