why, I would like to know

they say you did horrible things and fled town

left behind a dozen children for your wife to raise alone

she refused the cash you sent

baking, ironing, washing clothes for others,

feeding and housing your family

**

they say you absconded to avoid arrest

and no one would tell her where you were

why did you leave without telling her yourself

without saying goodbye?

was justice coming so fast that you ran,

or was it cowardice of having to explain?

**

you showed up years later, and daughters,

now grown women, sent you on your way

no forgiveness given for your

harried departure and abandonment

**

your beautiful bride came across the sea

married you and birthed your children

then raised them herself

after you went on the run

you died alone, it seems

**

an enigma, a mystery with no resolution

and no answer to the

WHY of what

they say you did

a kinder way was to stay, and not to have done

what they say you did

the legacy you left is a loss of not knowing you
