Why did Japanese Soldiers never use Shields?

Across Japan's bloody battlefields of old,

Samurai and foot soldiers fought brave and bold.

With swords, spears, and bows gripped tight in their hands,

But shields were not common in these warrior lands.

The samurai, riding swiftly on their steeds,

Wore strong armor, fulfilling their needs.

No shields required, their armor so tough,

Deflecting arrows, it was protection enough.

Foot soldiers too, with long blades or spears,

Both hands engaged, they formed lines without fear.

Simple helmets on their heads to block some blows,

But in the chaos, their bodies exposed.

Yet some shields stood tall, like the tate and taketaba,

Giving archers and gunners cover from the drama.

As war tactics changed, speed became the key,

And shields disappeared as armor proved trusty.

In Europe as well, the knight's shield met its fate,

As guns and full armor made it out of date.

So while samurai are known for their swords so sharp,

Their shields, less famous, still played a part.

From small hand shields to larger standing screens,

Shields had a role in Japan's war machines.

An ever-changing art, adapting to the times,

Though overshadowed by the katana's paradigm.

The shield, though less renowned than the blade,

In Japan's history, its mark has still made.

A witness to the battles, the bloodshed, the strife,

The shield, too, has earned its place in warrior life.
