In art and in life

Both frog and roach can become

The fairest of all

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you'll indulge me, I realize now that the original post with the parameters of this contest unintentionally echoed this title. Fitting how a poem about mundane objects can so unexpectedly evoke the magical.

The original competition parameters can be found here:

But let us not dally -- we're here to talk winners. The following are in no particular order, and all will be sent their prize via tip shortly! All entries will be listed at the bottom.

Without further ado......our winners!

This piece by D.J. Reddall hit the nail on the head with its ability to take the mundane and make a larger statement. The subtle commentary on materialism was wonderful.

Once again, Kelli used the constraints of the format to comment on an item that is truly magical but whose proliferation forces it into the realm of the mundane. Another simple yet profound observation on those items constantly surrounding us.

Cyrus used the form to comment on time through the lens of the clock. I loved how, in only 11 words, this piece evoked in me such a strong mood of contemplation that I had to include it.

Congrats to all! In my book, you're all winners. I love the brevity this form forces upon a piece, for it is the soul of wit. This was my second challenge in the 5-7-5 format, and I would expect more down the road.

Please peruse all the great entries below:
