Wherever

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read
Caspar David Friedrich, "Moonrise over the Sea," 1822

Where are they going, those gaunt, gallant ships?

Wherever you wish them to go, my friend!

Surely some madness tumbles from your lips:

Each ship must have a goal, every voyage an end!

Your imagination must be broken!

Why are we bound to obey the dull facts?

As many dreams can be had as spoken;

Forget where they're bound; let's dream new contracts!

I think that schooner is full of goblins

Sailing into the nightmares of bullies;

My sister sees fools with wide, toothless grins

Baffled by sails and yardarms and pulleys

Sailing in circles until they all drown!

See how our dreams have inverted your frown?
