Where Is My Mind?

A Poem for the Negative Space Challenge

Something is missing.

I can feel it
in the silence between my thoughts,
in the spaces where words
used to live.

I reach for it
and my fingers close
around nothing.

I search the rooms inside my head,
opening drawers,
looking beneath the bed,
digging through memories
that no longer seem to belong to me.

There are pieces everywhere.

A thought here.
A memory there.
A little bit of me
staring back from the mirror
with eyes I don't recognize.

I keep asking myself
where it went.

And I laugh.

Because what else is there to do
when something so important
has slipped away
and left you standing
alone,
wondering why everything feels
so empty?

The walls whisper.

The floor creaks.

The clock keeps moving
as if nothing has changed.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

I want to scream,
but the scream gets lost
somewhere between my chest
and my mouth.

I want to cry,
but the tears don't know
where to fall.

I want to think,
but the thought disappears
before I can catch it.

And somewhere
in the middle of all that noise

there is a hole.

A place where something
should be.

Maybe if I close my eyes—

Still nothing.

Just emptiness and dark corners I cannot get through.
