Where Hearts Finally Mend
A poem on grief, survival, and the second chances that define who we become.
Memories come and memories go,
People come and people go.
Happiness peaks and tears will flow,
How it ends, we never know.
It’s not the amount of days,
But the quality and jubilation
That define what we call our life.
Those who are always there,
Those who hold our hand and truly care
Through the highs and through the strife.
No one is meant to be permanent
Through every step along our path,
Though each has a purpose and plan—
A reason they were put there
Through highs and lows to help us stand.
Our hearts break when they leave our side,
Finality seems all too real.
But soon we’ll meet again;
On the other side, our hearts will finally heal.
Though we may not see them,
They’re never really truly gone.
They watch over us, smiling and waiting,
As we bravely soldier on.

Author’s Note:
This poem comes from a place of deep personal history. After losing my mother at 15 and my father at 31, I spent years navigating loss and struggle. It took an accidental overdose in my 20s and a firsthand encounter with God to realize I was being given a second chance.
Today, at 38, I look back at a path marked by that early grief and a battle with addiction that nearly took my life. Seeing the "other side" changed everything for me. This piece is a tribute to the grace that allowed me to heal, find sobriety, and build the stable life as a business owner I have today. I wrote this for anyone who has felt the sting of "finality" and needs to know that those we’ve lost are still cheering us on as we bravely soldier on.
