Where are we heading?

A poem

We are broken, we are lost
All our knowledge has gone astray
We have had to learn everything anew
For the umpteenth time
It is not our fault, or so everyone says
In truth, the responsibility lies with us
To survive in an age of denial
An age where nothing is clear
We hide our truths beneath an armour
Built from shattered dreams and illusions
We cover everything with little lies
It is easier that way
It just happens
We did not want this, and yet
The times compel us to protect ourselves
From every old wound that still echoes in our hearts
Do we even still have hearts?
Hidden beneath too many masks
Masks we cannot remove ourselves
We grope through the darkness
Searching for even the faintest sparks of light
But we find nothing
Where are we heading?
Toward heaven or toward hell?
I wish I knew
