Where Are All The Butterflies

It seems they gave up too

Where Are All The Butterflies

Where are all the butterflies?

It seems they gave up too

on humanity once and for all

and decided they were through

Where are all the wildflowers

that used to grow so free

beside the open fields of wheat

as far as we could see

Where are all the hummingbirds

that moved with hurried grace?

They left to search for simpler times

and disappeared without a trace

Where has our innocence gone

our delight in simple things?

We traded in our imagination

for pennies in a stream

Yet shiny pennies always fade

like rainbows in the sky

and leaves us searching endlessly

for happiness to buy

But happiness left us too

like the fragile butterflies

as we search for shiny pennies

with emptiness in our eyes
