When we ran out of sand

the punishment due

By A. S. LawrencePublished 2 months ago • 1 min read

When the ice caps melted,
we built platforms in Manhattan
to save the maps
and our pride.

After all, Venice is pretty!
Why can't New York be like that?
Maybe dry roads
are just body fat!

When the winters forsook us
the autumn trees died
and their yellow and red
stopped gracing our eyes.

But palm trees are nice!
We hated the ice!
Perhaps trade cherry patches
for coconut rice.

We lost our ozone hat
and the crops all slowed.
But hey, body fat
is a dangerous road!

We'll just eat less
and let God make his mess.
The anxiety's probably
just a shit test.

We took it in stride.
We kept all our pride.
Must be over, we laughed,
as the mountains all sighed.

But to tell you the truth,
it's the sand that we miss.
As the ocean and rock
everywhere anew kiss.

It'll take many years
to replace what was buried.
No beach volleyball!
No jiggly tan fairies!

No spending five hours
to find a five dollar watch
with gramps' metal wand
stuck between our tan crotch.

No sandcastles!  No moats of questionable engineering!

"Come back sand, come back!"  How will we live without your abrasion?

Were you mad that you never
received a greek deity like the ocean?

We did put you in smart phones!  Isn't that calling you smart sand?  Why have you hidden?  It's as though sand is banned!

"Come back sand, come back!"  Let us litter you once more.

We promise we don't just need glass for our big wooden doors!
