When I Grow Up

Poem that tries to resolve the existential doubts that prey on myself.

By Teresa GubernPublished 9 years ago • 1 min read

When I grow up

I will live in the top of a volcano

I’ll see the sun rising and the sun going to bed

I’ll look at the moon and the stars every night

And I’ll wake up with the first rays of the Sun

When I grow up

I’ll take care of my family

I’ll hug them every time they’ll come home

I’ll find them their favourite music

And join them for what they love

When I grow up

I’ll be whatever I desire to be

I’ll follow the clouds in the sky

I’ll hear the silence through the trees

And the pain of the streets

When I grow up

I will be a writer, a poet, I’ll be free

And I’ll write about dreams and nightmares,

About hope and anger,

About you and me.

And “you” must not be singular

For when I grow up

A part of a community I want to be.

I need people for the stories

Or they will be empty

– Just like me –

I’m not sure if this is my place

No idea if the ideal world is meant for me

But I promise I’ll build my future

Just as I want it to be

Little by little, poquito a poquito.
