When Being Becomes

By the depths it plumbs

By C. Rommial ButlerPublished 3 years ago • Updated 3 years ago • 1 min read
The open hand cannot abash where it supports...

When being becomes

The river undeterred

By the depths it plumbs...

<>

Do you hear the drums

And the unspoken word

When being becomes?

<>

Scattered breadcrumbs

Feed a little bird

By the depths it plumbs.

<>

It's dawn in the slums

And our life is absurd

When being becomes!

<>

Even the bums

Know that hope is lured

By the depths it plumbs.

<>

Hear the thundering drums

And the unspoken word

When being becomes

By the depths it plumbs!

Commentary: This villanelle references what has become my favorite poem: Emily Dickinson's Hope is the Thing with Feathers. I found this poem when I was in a dark place and slightly rearranged it into an a cappella piece, which has become a mantra of sorts for me. You can listen to it for free here:
