I am created and sustained of borrowed versions of myself

The young girl who survived merely by the purpose of protecting them

the young girl who made dinner and picked up your beer cans

and covered you with a blanket on the couch

who survived the abuse as a shield to protect them from it

the survivior who only existed in her own right in small moments

who escaped into war and uniforms and men who were mirrors of the same man who raised her

who became a mother

a mother begging for patience

raising a son surviving his own demons

fighting those demons for him

in therapist's offices

in hospital rooms

the mother hiding on the other side of the door in his darkest moments

shouting my love for my child while he put holes in the walls

the voices in his he begging him to kill me

then holing him when he comes back to himself

surviving the abuse to protect him from it

to protect him from ever believing that he does not deserve love

and at the end of it all

what is left of me

when there is no one left to protect?

sad poetry
