What Stayed Behind
Memories never really vacate your head and heart

What Stayed Behind
I thought I left it there
in years already gone.
Yet certain thoughts return
when least expected.
You hear one passing phrase
or see one certain place.
Then everything forgotten
comes back without a sound.
Not because it still remains
or asks to be relived.
Just memories returning
to prove they once were real.
I used to fight the feeling
and push the thoughts away.
Now I let them arrive
then leave without a fight.
Nothing can change old days
or alter what was done.
No second version waits
behind another door.
You stop asking questions
that nobody can answer.
You stop reopening things
that already reached the end.
And somehow with acceptance
the weight becomes less sharp.
Not gone and not forgotten
just easier to carry.
So I leave old stories
where they were always meant.
No longer asking life
to undo what it did.
