What Lurks Beneath the Sand

Hidden in the fear, the horror, and tears, of people like you and me

What Lurks Beneath the Sand

The shoreline sleeps by day.
Soft beneath the sun.
Yet darkness wakes at dusk.
When daylight comes undone.

The waves erase all signs.
Of those who walked before.
Keeping every secret.
Along the lonely shore.

The wind begins to cry.
Through drifting grains of gold.
Its voice becomes a warning.
Of stories left untold.

Each footprint disappears.
Without a single trace.
As though the sand itself.
Has swallowed every face.

The moon climbs slowly high.
Its silver touches land.
Revealing hidden shadows.
That rise beneath the sand.

No heartbeat can be heard.
No voice will call your name.
Yet something walks beside you.
And nothing looks the same.

The sea grows strangely still.
The gulls no longer fly.
Even the restless tide.
Refuses to ask why.

A cold hand finds your own.
Without a form to see.
It lingers for a moment.
Then slips back silently.

The dunes begin to shift.
Without a breath of air.
Creating silent pathways.
That lead to nowhere.

Old whispers fill the night.
Like ghosts without a grave.
Calling lost souls onward.
To where the dark waves gave.

Turn back before first light.
Don’t search for what has gone.
Some doors should stay buried.
Until all time has gone.

For fear was never born.
Inside the raging sea.
It waits beneath the sand…
For someone else to see.
