What If?
What if my life had been ideal?
No abandonment by my mother,
She’d stayed to raise me and not run away
Her reasons wouldn’t make me wonder
What if my dad had been a loving man?
Not cruel and narcissistic
He would have loved selflessly
Been benevolent, not parasitic
What if the neighbor had kept his hands to himself?
Not on this little girl
Maybe the woman I’d become
Would’ve known an untainted world
What if memories like these had not
Influenced the choices I would make
I’d not have rushed to get away
But my self-worth and value were at stake
What if I hadn’t married the wrong man?
Who debased me and brought me lower
I might not have wasted years of my youth
Allowing him to steal my dreams, he readily devoured
What if all this had not occurred?
I could have soared with wings in life
Not fought off the demons around every corner
I knew neither peace nor ease, just strife
What if I’d never met the one man,
Who changed my life and gave me a family?
I might not have known contentment or joy
I might have lived embittered and unhappily.
I could’ve spent my life in hate
Blamed others for my own errors
Missed the many blessings despite so much evil
Never known the beauty in love and life’s splendors
