It lies in wait
For when
You can't sleep
On your own
When counting breaths
Feels like threats
And the sound
The drumming
Of your heart
Is spiked with dread
And hopelessness
Just beneath floorboards
Tip tapping
Steady and sure
Caressing the walls
Both external
And internal
It rattles through
Your very being
The echo of its hum
Is inescapable
If you try to turn
And face the strange
You'll find emptiness
Only to feel it
Stalking you
The moment
You face forward
Again
And the air listens
Remembers
With persistence
You can't outrun it
Or bargain
It just is
And will continue
Without pause
To be so
One step behind you
Until it surpasses
You
Long after your silence
