What Are We?

Dear Earth Dwellers,

I know you're out there listening

and sometimes you get this feeling...

How can I describe this feeling

without comparing it to a black hole?

You know the one, the One that asks

for more and more, but still—

no matter what you throw into it,

you're left feeling emptier than before.

*

You spend each night surveying

the vast sky. Shooting stars pass by

in a flash on your phone screen

or television, and you think:

I'd like to look that pretty as I disintegrate,

and catch fire "aesthetically".

*

But you—

my dear harbinger

of cosmic doom, don't operate

as they do.

*

Your presence sings

of the beginning and ending

all in one breath.

*

Some may see your accretion disk as a warning,

but I know the secret power

held within; infinite density,

turning all of existence

into one singularity.

*

Yes, destruction precedes transformation.

Yes, light fades.

Yes, even darkness dissipates.

*

Still, there you are

in the middle of it all.

*

The event horizon,

your gravitational pull so forceful…

I can feel it even now!

Shaking, stretching, and soaking up

everything.

*

Promising, inevitability...

a time in space where bodies stack up,

one on top of the other;

in a giant hug or a bloody battlefield.

I guess that part is up to us.

I know even stars collapse

and become Us.
