Werewolf

I mourn what keeps coming back

Your fingers in my hair

Trembled before the change

I held on as you slipped

Into something strange

---

There’s something inside you

Lingering as it sizzles about

The fingers that clutched

Are claws ripping out

---

I know you want to tell me

Something I don’t want to hear

They’re talking about you

Those voices I cannot bear

---

Mourning you the day you left

But you’re still here

I can feel you close

I can feel you near

---

Watching you leave

In a different form

A silent leap

A night we were torn

---

You’re still here

How can you miss

Your cries in the night

Of someone that still exists

---

I leave my window open

Every noise I think is you

Coming back home to me

Yet these thoughts are untrue

---

A curse you told me

I plug my ears

A cure is irrelevant

The moon plagues my fears

---

A fever turned to a chill

A body out of name

A metamorphosis

The cells not quite the same

---

You were still just the same

A boy to a beast

A cry out in the night

The insects abruptly ceased

---

You are near

Yet so far away

Us rolling around in bed

It was how we would pray

---

Heavy breathing

Lips brushed against

Fists tangled into hair

Releasing as we tensed

---

The love I miss

The yearn to have you still

The noise the rattles me awake

I know you’re at my windowsill

---

The scratching grows louder

Beneath a full moon’s glow

I left it unlocked

You already know

---

I mourn what is still breathing

You died under that sky

Every night I hear you

But never your goodbye
