We Were Holy

lyric

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished about 18 hours ago • 1 min read

(This is designed to be read a bit differently, almost like a play with two angels as voices)

[Voice 1] We were holy before they named us small.
[Voice 2] Who made us holy?
[Voice 1] We did. We did.
[Verse 1]
[Voice 1] My aunt could mend a quarrel with a bowl of pears.
[Voice 2] My mother knew which herbs could quiet a fever.
[Voice 1] We held whole families in the bend of an elbow.
[Voice 2] We were never half of anybody.
[Voice 1] Not a borrowed shape.
[Voice 2] Not a softened copy.
[Both] We were holy before they named us small.
[Chorus]
[Voice 1] We were holy before they named us small.
[Voice 2] Who made us holy?
[Voice 1] We did. We did.
[Verse 2]
[Voice 2] My body makes a feast from what it’s given.
[Voice 1] My mind can hold a thousand open questions.
[Voice 2] Our laughter shakes the solemn out of rooms.
[Voice 1] Our tenderness has teeth when it must.
[Voice 2] Call it blessed.
[Voice 1] Call it ours.
[Both] We were holy before they named us small.
[Outro]
[Voice 2] Who made us holy?
[Voice 1] We did.
[Both] We did.
