We Were Almost Something. Almost Was Everything.
A reflection on the love that nearly was and the echoes it leaves behind
They don’t write songs about almosts. There are no anniversaries for things that never officially began. But if there were, I’d still remember the day we met like it was inked into my skin.
You weren’t mine. Not really. But there was a look in your eyes that told me maybe, just maybe we were thinking the same thing. That if life had tilted slightly differently, we could’ve had something real.
We shared everything but a title. Conversations that ran past midnight. Glances that lingered a second too long. Messages with hidden meanings. It wasn’t nothing. But it also wasn’t enough.
We had the makings of something beautiful, we just never built it.
Maybe it was bad timing. Maybe it was fear. Maybe it was both pretending not to feel too much, too fast. So instead, we became experts at restraint. At dancing on the edge of something real and never quite jumping in.
And then, slowly, you faded. Not all at once. In pieces.
First, the replies got shorter. Then the calls stopped. Until all I was left with was silence where your name used to live.
I’ve had relationships that burned out in flames — but this was different. This was a quiet disappearance. A slow unraveling of something that never even had the chance to fully form. And in a strange way, that made it hurt more.
Because how do you mourn the loss of something that was never officially yours?
You became a ghost in rooms you never walked into. A memory of a future that never happened. I saw you in strangers' faces, in songs we once talked about, in sentences I never got to say.
People don’t understand the weight of almosts. But almosts stay.
They linger. They whisper “what if” when the night is too quiet. They pull you into daydreams you know you shouldn’t be having. They remind you that closeness doesn’t always come with closure.
But here's what I know now:
We were a lesson, not a loss.
You taught me that love isn’t just about feelings, it’s about showing up. That timing does matter. And that silence is also an answer.
We were almost something.
But I was ready for more.
And “almost” just isn’t enough anymore.
