We Used To…
An Elegy
She used to wear an untamed smile on her lips—in her eyes.
She used to laugh those guttural laughs when I’d tell a joke for the hundredth time.
•••
She used to lie there, worry-free—her head tucked in to my neck.
She used to fall asleep quickly, like how we fell in love, when we were young and couldn’t forget.
•••
I used to see myself in her smile, her presence told me who I was.
I used to fold her close at night, while my arm would eventually go numb.
•••
I used to know her every thought, just as she could read each of mine.
I used to be more ‘normal’ back then—I used to tell the truth when I said I was fine.
