We take what we can
a poem about what we share
Well when it's over, we can count what's ours
and what's not, on the petals of a flower
the way we used to predict a fickle love.
but for now, as it happens,
before we call it,
before the curtains close
we'll take whatever we can from each other
take the pearl from the lunar eyes of our lovers loving, or the
deep saffron from the belly laughs of youth
take the cedars, and the sages from a forgiveness that saved us and the
smoke left behind by a loss felt too soon
and when we take what we can from each other
we give what we can to each other
then we're no longer strangers, or Others
or secluded wells of dark water
we're gulfs, sharing aquamarines, salts and sand
volleying and refracting the same sunbeams
the same stars
the same clouds.
