We Rule the World

A Poem

I live in a city where roads are carpeted,

and luxury vehicles lined the shining streets,

People dressed in their finest, a symbol of our prosperity.

Here, the buildings reach for the sky,

Their gleaming windows reflected the sunlight,

And the sounds of bustling traffic fill the air.

.

Our president is a symbol of power,

His every word was heard around the clock,

Each sentence is analyzed, dissected, devoured,

His every move is watched by the flock.

Kings awaits his phone call with bated breath,

And dictators bow before his might,

His voice echoes through the halls of power,

And a warning to those who would cower.

.

To wonder,

What lies beyond the glamour and the glitz,

Beyond the polished smiles and the fancy cars,

Beyond the façade of power and prestige?

Do we really live in a civilized world,

Or is it just a veil that we wear,

To hide the ugliness that lurks within,

The poverty, the pain, the despair?

The old woman in the alleyway,

Digging through the garbage for recycling scrap,

Her feeble hands and tired eyes,

A testament to a different truth.

And the crow that waits patiently,

For her to finish her meager search.
