We Broke In for a Laugh

They asked what’s going on in there? I said I can’t say that out loud

We Broke In for a Laugh

In the haunted house,

we broke in just to laugh,

but laughter’s a liar

when tears crawl from your gut

and scare the shit out of you.

Three girls.

Two mad as moonlight.

I was the brain, the ghost finder.

my intuition oh my word,

It told me, turn the hell around.

turn and just run,

I can’t say that out loud.

to my friends can I?

Kitchen was smelly and cold.

Freezer still plugged,

alive in a dead place,

bulging with ice like it was dreaming

of drowning us.

I opened the window, just to let the stench out

Clair. Jenny.

Pry the lid open

like it’s hiding treasure.

Ice spills. Starts filling the room

Bang. Oh my god

no way was that ice inside.

Window exit, all three in flight.

The ice flowed from the window behind us,

like it was following.

it’s evil the girls scream.

We land on grass.

Look back.

Impossible.

No one built that thing.

A snowman stood

in a place it couldn’t grow,

face formed in real time,

laughing with a sound that stabbed.

Then lightning.

More than one.

A Wrath of it from the sky,

next thing the snowman burned

like some frosty demon

with unfinished business.

We ran.

We ran to the gate.

Two walkers stopped.

“What’s going on in there?”

Breathless, twitching,

I said, just some lads messing around.

we didn’t stop running.

When we finally did stop running,

the others said,

“Why didn’t you tell them the truth?”

the hikers they meant.

I said,

Because if I had told them,

we’d be locked up in chains.

In the Insane Asylum.

And guess what girls, I said.

They looked at me what they asked?

I said, that’s why.

I can’t say that Out loud girls can I.
