Watching Birds

A short poem

I watched a group of birds through my front window today.

They were very restless, hovering, flitting

To the tree

To the bush

To the ground

In some sequence known only to them

Do birds have a hierarchy?

Do the highest ranked birds get their pick of perches?

Or is that random? First come, first served.

I'm guessing the highest ranked birds get their pick of mates.

But does male or female choose?

They're all quiet now,

Hiding somewhere, away from predators and heat.

Perhaps I'll see the same birds tomorrow.

I'm no expert,

But I enjoyed today's show.
