Was This A Spirit Horse

I was near his fence.

The horse walked up to me.

Looked me straight in the eyes. And said, Neigh.

I suppose. That’s his equivalent to saying. Hi.

“Hi,” I said.

To which he put his head nearer to me. Over the fence.

He put his ear to one side.

To which I whispered into it.

I’m not a horse whisperer.

Immediately he shot his head up.

He nodded it up and down. Three times.

I know that. He was probably saying.

Maybe it was. Maybe it wasn’t.

Then he got his back hooves. And banged them on the ground.

As if he was saying. Wanna go for a walk?

Nay lad, I said. I’m not jumping a fence in the dark.

To go for a walk in the dark. With a horse.

Not tonight. The horse looked at me.

He shook his mane.

He said. In horse language. Neigh. Again.

Then he walked away. And I never saw him again.

That night. Maybe he wasn’t there.

Maybe he was a spirit horse.

Who wanted to whisk me away.

To a land of peace. For half an hour’s trot.

But I walked on. And the moment was forgot.
