Warrior Etched In Brick
Somewhere, History Whispers to Us
The warrior is riding into the savage breeze
under the rolling sun
golden and timeless
marking yearly odysseys
This artistry of Native American lore
painted on the side
of a decaying brick building
in a neighborhood
that lost the
‘got up and left’ battle itself
Now washed in graffiti
etched by high school students
the warrior perhaps doesn’t understand
that Beatrice is a hoe
this way to the hoe….
and
777 wuz here
Fight Me, signed Cesar
Going back in time
the warrior
quite possibly part
of a hunting party
buffalo tonnage thundering
woolly and mad
at least the few left by
ill-natured, ignorant
scavengers of European descent
And now the hands that have marked him
are also ignorant of his trials
a lost country unraveling
in a quilt of colors
the color of callousness
