Walking Without Shoes
Being Who You Are
Walking Without Shoes
With a grateful heart, I walk with you,
On the sands of time, no need for shoes.
It’s not upon dirt or sand we trod,
And what I have to say might seem a bit odd.
I let the thoughts of many fade away,
Not allowing them to linger, not even a day.
For if I should give them any place in my mind,
Some things they would bring may not be so kind.
Upon imaginary paths, these sands of time,
I walk with smiles and happiness not costing a dime.
My grandchild who cherishes the differences in life,
They seek to be different without causing strife.
We’ve walked together looking behind and afar,
Talking of uniqueness, of being who you are.
Let no one determine what is best or who you might be,
For life is to live, to sing, to think, and to be free.
Our conversations reminiscent of those of others,
Take on a different approach with many topics to cover.
Let’s come and reason together I’ve been instructed to do,
Always remember that life’s greatest gift has been you.
Some grandparents never take time to understand,
But push and pull the grandchildren through the sand.
Not allowing them to make their own way,
But seeking to sway, from cradle, to crawling, to standing, unto
this day.
To leave a lesson for a grandchild that’s true,
One must trust and allow them to be them and not become you.
Their uniqueness and imagination is what sets them apart,
Possessing their own gifts that will fill your heart.
