Walking Into October
As we are leaving September
October challenge: Prompt - Write a poem that makes October feel like a place you can enter.
Imagine October isn't a month. It's somewhere you can go.
What does it look like when you get there? Maybe the streets are covered in wet leaves and porch lights glow before dinner. Maybe there's a bonfire somewhere in the distance, a house you shouldn't knock on, or a path through the woods that wasn't there in September. Your October might be cozy, eerie, nostalgic, lonely, strange, or something else entirely.
Write a poem that turns October into a place and invites the reader inside. Give it weather. Give it sounds. Give it somewhere to wander. Then see where October takes you.

When leaving September, prepare for more
color on the trees, leaves even on your floor
needing to sweep them out the door
Colorful leaves raining down, that I adore
🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂
When arriving, there is so much to explore
Remember those special times, do not ignore
Indigenous Peoples Day, or Columbus Day, your
choice. I am certainly not keeping score
🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂 🍁🍂🍁
October is a time for outdoor fires and smores
The snap, crackle, pop of the fire soars
You couldn't see the deer trails before
And now there are some to explore
🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂
October has Halloween, with spooks galore
Every child is excited to get to October, for
all the fright nights, and candy they will savor
Candy apples, in the south and caramel or
apples right off the trees in the north in October
🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂 🍁🍂🍁
We all enter October with joy and more
No worries about all the gore
As it is a bit fun to visit and explore
all nature, the food, the scare and anymore
than that I can ignore.
