The Life I Once Dreamed Of: Waking Up from the Gentle Illusion

By Water&Well&PagePublished 10 months ago 1 min read

The life I once longed for—the one I used to gaze at with such hopeful eyes—looking back now, it was nothing more than a dream.

Not everyone gets to live a dramatic, spectacular life, like the lead character in a movie. And honestly, not every day can be truly one-of-a-kind.

In reality, the days we live are almost universally the same: the same solitude, the same unremarkable blandness.

It took half a lifetime for me to finally wake up from that dream.

It was only then that I understood just how weightless the first half of my life had been. It arrived without a sound, and it departed without a trace. No indelible mark was left behind, and there is no past worth lingering over or cherishing.

Now that I'm awake, I've also become a little numb.

All I can do is embrace this ordinary flatness, and lean into the persistent loneliness, as I walk through the rest of this life.
