Rain that never reaches the ground

Before the rain

there is a silence

that leans

against the windows

the trees

hold their breath

the birds

misplace their songs

i loosen

nothing

there is weather enough

inside me

the pressure falls

without asking

leaves

turn over

to show

their pale undersides

the sky

forgets its blue

i keep

the same pulse

the rain arrives

not all at once

but patiently

finding

every surface

that believed

it would be spared

the gutters

learn their names

the earth

drinks

without gratitude

i keep

the same pulse

night

comes early

wrapped

in cloud

lightning

writes

brief truths

across the dark

thunder

answers

long after

the question

i keep

the same pulse

by morning

the branches

carry

what they survived

the puddles

borrow

a quieter sky

someone says

the storm

has passed

they are right

and not

the air

begins again

i keep

the same pulse
