Vanishing Act

And the cycles I've seen

Here and gone.

Fluttering down.

Falling foolishly.

.

A butterfly with wings

Mended by glue

Flapping, flying.

.

Bright against blue sky,

Eager on the page.

Quick to inspire.

.

It's light work,

Kissing parchment,

Crafting lies.

.

Until the well

Decides to run dry.

Words like to betray.

.

They enjoy the act

Of running away.

Teasing. Hiding.

.

They tuck below

Overly eager tongues

And rot.

.

The taste of decay

Is too much for the novice

And they run away.

.

I've seen it ten thousand

Times before.

Disintegration.

.

Of form and will,

Success and desire.

The rhythm falls apart.

.

And the ink dries

Because the cap's off.

They're possessed by metrics.

.

Numbers that rule

Through unstable cruelty.

Useless things of comparison.

.

That's the game,

Waving goodbye to dreamers

Unable to persist.
