Valentine’s Day

*This poem is about how Valentine’s Day and blind dates are overrated.

The calendar says it’s Valentine’s Day.

I don’t feel it.

Too much is wrong in my life.

I wasn’t struck by cupid’s arrow.

The romantic’s weren’t out tonight.

They stayed home sick and alone eating chicken noodle soup by the fire trying to recover from a nasty head cold.

The snow makes everyone emotionally cold.

This is a holiday to make the lonely feel more alone.

It’s also the day to show off that diamond ring that you just got.

You aren’t cool if you don’t have one.

Valentine’s Day is like Christmas.

It’s really not about love.

It’s a day to show off the things that others bought you.

The more gifts you get the more loved you will appear.

I don’t feel love in the air today.

It’s the same air as yesterday only your pocket is $500 lighter.

It’s a day to remind the single that they are single.

They are left out from the party and expensive jewelry, chocolates and flowers are rubbed in their face all day long.

It’s a day to be reminded of lost loves.

The one that got away.

The one that never was.

And the one you wish you had.

And there should be no shame in being single.

There should be no stigma attached to valuing your alone time.

You should not be pushed into blind dates with some random guy that you will never return his call.

There is not enough wine at the Olive Garden to make this conversation entertaining.

At least you left the house and were forced to remove the snow from your car.

You were forced to dress up and put makeup on.

But you would rather be at home reading a book and burning a Halloween witches brew scented candle with your cat.

You can smell the spices and woods and long to be near them.

You keep zoning out on the conversation and thinking about all the laundry you need to do once you get back home.

Your cat is better entertainment than this blonde preppy guy you have nothing in common with.

But you gave it a chance and you left your house.

Because no one should be alone on Valentine’s Day.
