“Sorry.” He shook his head. “It was a long time ago. But it still sits with me. Some days like an echo, some days like a scream.” Rachel looked out at the horizon.

“I lost my brother. February. He was thirty-one. Heart failure. No warning.” Caleb nodded slowly. “You’re trying to outrun the silence.” “Something like that.”

A gust of wind kicked up, whipping Rachel’s hair into her face. She didn’t bother fixing it. “You ever feel like everyone is expecting you to bounce back?” she asked. “Like there is a time limit on grief?”
