Simple. Broken. Still beautiful. She took the shot. It wasn’t much, but it was a start. Behind her, the screen door creaked open. She didn’t need to look to know it was the neighbor.

She had seen him once, the day she arrived—mid-thirties, barefoot, hair like he'd just woken up from a two-year nap. He’d given her a polite nod and gone back to fixing his bike, his dog watching silently from the porch.

Today, he walked toward her with easy steps and a mug in hand. “You always shoot in the evenings?” he asked. Rachel lowered the camera.
