Untold truths

Painted faces

By Sara CPublished about a year ago • 1 min read

Behind the smiling, painted face,

a different echo starts to race.

The careful laugh, the measured gaze,

a masquerade through sunlit days.

The world sees brick, a solid wall,

a figure standing proud and tall.

They do not see the hollow ache,

the tender ground that starts to shake.

I wear a coat of polished gray,

and speak the things you wish to say.

I fit the mold, I play the part,

a stranger to my own wild heart.

This practiced self, a crafted shield,

protects a truth that can't be healed.

It keeps the ghost of what I feel,

a quiet echo, hushed and real.

But in the dark, the mask falls loose,

a moment's breath, a fragile truce.

The mirror shows the weary eyes,

the truest self beneath the lies.

And in that gaze, a silent plea,

to finally set the captive free.

For what is hidden holds the key,

to who I'm meant to truly be.
