UNDONE IN MY HEAD

Thoughts can be dangerous

UNDONE IN MY HEAD

A tiny thought came loose last night,
And dangled by a thread,
I should have left the thing alone,
But pulled it from my head.

Monday fell out first of all,
Then half of yesterday,
A birthday rolled beneath the bed,
My childhood ran away.

Old kisses tumbled down the stairs,
Still warm upon the lips,
The names of people I once loved,
Slid slowly through my grip.

My worries knotted round my feet,
My fears climbed up the wall,
One brave thought hid behind the clock,
Too frightened now to fall.

My mind became a woollen mess,
Of colours, words and years,
The red was love, the blue was loss,
The silver thread was tears.

I tried to knit myself again,
But dropped each thought I knew,
The needles bent, the pattern laughed,
And nothing fitted true.

The moon climbed through my window,
With needles made of light,
She sat beside my tangled mind,
And knitted through the night.

She put my dreams where fears had been,
And stitched my tears with gold,
The finished pattern looked quite strange,
But beautifully bold.

I was not who I’d been before,
My seams were odd and thin,
Yet every hole she could not mend,
Allowed the stars to shine in.

So leave one thought unravelled,
Don’t mend each broken part,
For being undone inside your head,
May open up your heart.
