Unburden Me
poem/song describing a toxic relationship with a parent

When did I become a mule for your baggage?
I became a buffer in your fucked-up marriage.
I was a child when you treated me like a therapist,
Like my mind was a storage space for your emotions.
/
I'm giving it all back...
With no return address.
These feelings were never mine...
And I owe you no forgiveness.
/
Unburden me,
I refuse to be at fault for your sins.
Unburden me,
So I can feel like my life is mine again.
Unburden me,
Or I'll have to leave you behind.
Unburden me,
Or I won't be back next time.
/
When was I supposed to grow up
When you didn't even grow up yourself?
You're a narcissistic manchild
Who gets offended by me living for myself!
I have to empty my soul
Of all the poison you poured in me.
I'm not sure I can ever trust you again
Because it's clear you don't want me to be the woman I could be.
/
Unburden me,
I refuse to be at fault for your sins.
Unburden me,
So I can feel like my life is mine again.
Unburden me,
Or I'll have to leave you behind.
Unburden me,
Or I won't be back next time.
