Unbelonging of the Muses

we were universes colliding

We were universes colliding,

meeting only briefly

as ships passing in the night.

In that moment,

fleeting,

Heart was right.

We may have vowed,

in a different life,

that only death could divide

the paths of lovers,

destined.

But parting was like breathing,

and without it,

we were restless.

Muses rarely come in pairs,

and if they do,

they’re often scarce of room

to flourish.

We understood this,

but how sweet was the melody

of our longing,

nourished.

We were born to the sea,

Heart full of myths

and fantasies of lives we

never knew.

I found you in

the rolling waves and thunder,

saw your face

in sunrays, weeping

golden tears — a treasure

undiscovered.

We tried to be runaways

for a heartbeat or two,

but it ended,

as it always did, with

our universes calling through

to remind us that

unbelonging was part of

our destiny.

I will hold you

in memories of

shipwreck and careless

wonder,

Heart full of bliss

and fingerprints of my

distant lover.

We were universes colliding,

named for our

wreckage

and what we could

have been.
