Two Sides of One Extreme

The faces we show the world

Her heart aches with the knowledge that fills its chambers,

Causing the sun rise to taint the bitterness of her emotions,

Pristine beauty of the world doesn’t affect her as it should,

As she dreams of the seaside, the sea breeze and the oceans.

Nightmares in her waking hours take the toll on her screams,

Leaving her devastated in their wake as they pass her by,

Curled in upon herself, she drowns in the deepest concerns,

Hollowed out of happiness as she gives in to the sobs to cry.

But she’s stronger than she realises and I see her rise again,

One swift self kick in the butt and she stands tall once more,

I’ve never seen her trampled and fallen for very long,

In fact, her resilience, her ability to overcome, leaves me in awe.

Once she’s strangled her heartbreak into submission, she rises,

To again be the queen of agony I’ve always known her to be,

She plants a sinister smile upon her gracious face to begin,

And hawks out a cruel cackle of glee at the resulting debris.

I tremble in fear as she casts her glance my way, but I’m safe,

As she saunters past with her head arrogantly held erect,

Searching diligently for one that is deserving of her wrath,

Those with the evilest of hearts she’s known to collect.

I whisper quietly when she leaves the room, “Thank you my Queen,

For allowing me to witness the darkness of your soul today,

For the courage to view the honesty of your character,

And the vengefulness in which you lead a life, as your protege.”

Unbelievably she heard my whisper and responds in kind,

Take care my loyal subject, do not waste the coldness of your heart,

Stand tall, raise the dead within my name, live arrogantly by day,

But by night, worship your passion, make love to my counterpart.”

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

  • That's a supremely poetic pep talk, Colleen! You hold your head high, meet the morrow, raise the dead & love without end.
