TRUTH

Truth always knows how to bring things out into the open

TRUTH

Truth stared straight into my eyes,
it never blinked or turned away,
I tried to hide behind myself,
but truth had something else to say.

I painted smiles across my lips,
pretending everything was fine,
but underneath the pretty words,
the hurt was always really mine.

Truth does not knock upon your door,
or wait until you let it in,
it crawls beneath the lies you tell,
and settles underneath your skin.

I seen it standing in the glass,
the face I sometimes did not know,
the eyes were holding everything,
my mouth was frightened letting go.

I swallowed words for far too long,
until they nearly swallowed me,
I kept them locked behind my teeth,
afraid of what the truth might free.

Some people dress their lies in gold,
then wear them proudly like a crown,
but truth can see beneath the shine,
and quietly pull the whole thing down.

I learnt that truth can bloody hurt,
without a fist or sharpened knife,
one sentence spoken from the heart,
can change the doorway of your life.

So look into these frightened eyes,
there’s nothing beautiful to hide,
just all the things I never said,
still pushing hard to get outside.

I am not asking you to stay,
or understand the things I knew,
I only ask before you judge,
make sure your own reflection’s true.

Because one day the mask will fall,
and every hidden word will show,
truth never needs to shout your name,
it just likes being ahead of the game.
